Henry Darger and The Realms of The Unreal

Henry Darger went unnoticed throughout most of his life; disregarded as crazy, a recluse. The documentary In The Realms of the Unreal focuses on the brilliant masterpiece Darger created during 73 reclusive years.The 15,000 page novel focuses on the fictional world surrounding the Vivian Girls (not the NY Band), whose obstacles and adversities were influenced by Darger's own struggle with an unresponsive God and the evils done unto him by humans.
Darger chose to portray the heroes of the epic novel as girls because he felt that girls were braver and stronger than boys- a pretty radical view for a man born in 1892.
