Anna Joy Springer, member of the 90s Gilman St. scene band Blatz, is touring in conjunction with the upcoming publication of her new novel, The Vicious Red Relic, Love out loud. As a part of her reading, Rachel Carns of The Need and visual artist / musician / renaissance woman Tara Jane O'Neil are composing musical accompaniments to Springer's spoken word text.
I saw the performance in LA @ Pieter performance art space in Lincoln Heights, and it was amazing! Carns played a super rad, keyboard tuned in a vaudevillian pitch, and Tara Jane O'Neil played various instruments, from a gardening pitchfork connected by electromagnetic sensors (I think?) to distortion pedals and conventional instruments, like guitar, played unconventionally with rad, noise producing techniques.
Prior to Anna Joy's reading, Eileen Myles performed a conceptual reading her journals, which was an amazing way to begin an evening filled with a brilliant roster of rad fem&queer performances, closed by an awesome lesbian band called LESBIANS. Yes!
*Aww, I found this old picture of Anna Joy & Annie from Blatz on LarryLivermore.com.
